Front Page!

Sometimes you open up a gift and you are just so stunned you are speechless. That’s what happened to me when I opened the package and saw this magazine cover.  Hello, can you say SO very excited?! Ok, ok, so my sister dreamed it up at PhotoShop…but it definitely took me a few minutes to figure it out. And honestly, isn’t this where my sweet marshmallow creations should be anyway? I have really great marshmallow ideas that are tasty, unique and some are sooo simple!

Marshmallow Penguins (caution- very cute marshmallow post)

I was browsing the bakery department at my local supermarket and spotted these adorable little penguins on top of cookies! I just couldn’t resist coming home and attempting them myself. I love new marshmallow ideas and especially love it when I see other people and places coming up with new ideas for marshmallows too. To make the penguins I used bare marshmallows and piped black tinted frosting for the head and flippers then orange frosting for the nose and feet. I first piped white eyes but then decided to use candy eyeballs instead because I was afraid the black frosting would run into the white eyes. I had some little marshmallow snowmen leftover from the other day (that I had put in the freezer…so smart of me!)  and I decided to let it make friends with the penguins. Way too cute!  I think if someone has a winter themed cake going on, these would give it the perfect touch.

Marshmallow Army

<Singing> ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, La la la lah
I made this very cute large army of mini-marshmallow carolers. I stacked a few mini-marshmallows together using white chocolate as the glue and used chocolate morsels for the hats. I was sooo excited to use my Americolor black edible writing pen to easily give the coal eyes and buttons on these frosty treats. Which ever holiday you celebrate this season may it be merry and bright! I think the two snowmen on the right are leaning in for a hug!

Hello Marshmallow

I thought this Hello Kitty pez dispenser was pretty cute. I was always intrigued with the pez and pez dispenser…such a funny idea to make little candies pop out of the neck of a super hero or famous icon when you click it back. …And why was is it called PEZ? I’ll tell you… it is from the German word Pfefferminz… meaning peppermint, which is what the original candies were made of. Click back the head of the dispenser and a tiny candy pops out. It’s entertaining and tasty.   Brilliant I say.
For my marshmallow masterpiece I molded a good sized piece of white fondant to make her head, and tinted a small piece pink for her bow. I used my finest brush to paint on the black whiskers, and eyes with my colorants. I put the eyes in the ‘natural’ position, and that is the only thing that makes my Hello Kitty just a little off….her eyes are VERY far apart. To bring my marshmallow to level with the pez dispenser I put the candy coated marshmallow on top of a second candy coated marshmallow. Klicken Sie, essen Sie!

Breakfast...don't skip it!

I recently heard on the radio that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I think I have heard that many times in the past, actually, but for some reason this very important meal, often is left out. I made the tiniest fried egg sunnyside up with two little pieces of toast. Personally, I like my eggs scrambled, but when I make the fondant eggs scrambled it didn’t look so pretty. This sunnyside up delight looks fresh off the pan…a tiny dab of water gave it a glistening real look of eggs. Bon Appetite.

A rainy day past time...

Sometimes a rainy day calls for doing just one thing……

Ice Cream Twist

I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream...cool vanilla soft serve. I wasn’t sure how I was going to make the cake cone at first, but once I started molding the fondant it came together better than I expected. Then I made a long white snakey piece and swirled it on top of the cone. The sprinkles on the plate are indeed real sprinkles. Love it!  I'm headed out now.... Maybe the ice cream parlor will have 'the twist'...that's my favorite. A perfect blend of half chocolate and half vanilla soft serve twirled up on a cone!

Friday night Sushi – Yum! マシュマロ

Adorable. Simply adorable…Little tiny sushi rolls on marshmallows. My favorite kind is the California roll. I think rice, cucumber and avocado is such a great combination in the salty wrap dipped in soy sauce. Sometimes they put little carrots in too.  I don’t even like the taste of an avocado unless it is in sushi. I took the fondant rice, cucumber and a tiny carrot color and rolled them all together, and wrapped it in seaweed colored fondant. I then cut the fondant logs up just like a real sushi roller.
In case you are wondering this is how you say marshmallow in Japanese マシュマロ

Back To School...

Back to the grind after fun and sun…and sadly the summer season is soon ending, and according to all the stores its Back To School time! Shelves are stocked with backpacks, notebooks, pens, erasers, lunch coolers and the $1.00 bins are busting with supplies. I created this little back to school marshmallow treat with a composition notebook and pencil. (I mean a teeny tiny composition notebook and pencil). I used my fine paintbrush dipped in black colorant to make the mottled swirls on the book and to write the #2 on the hand molded pencil. I also hand painted the pencil point.  These marshmallows aren’t just amazing, they are smart too! I think I deserve an A+ for this art-piece.

Get nearer to nature

Get nearer to nature…and take a hike! Well, not literally. Take a hike on one of my sweet trails going up the mountain side of this tasty marshmallow treat. This is the second marshmallow to travel this high above sea level…second only to yesterday’s delectable treat.  I feel proud to have transported and carefully brought these sweet gems to an amazing new level.

The most realistic blueberries ever

I love going to the farm and picking fresh fruit. My favorite is blueberries. My Grammie makes an amazing Blueberry Pizza that is out of this world. Today I went blueberry picking and tried to duplicate the deep blue of a blueberry with my fondants and colorings. My first attempts were too ocean blue, and I realized that blueberries are so dark blue they are almost black. I tried several ways to make the crowns out of fondant and decided that painting the crowns on was the best way to do it. I made the traditional green carton out of my fondant and carefully placed my dark dark blue fondant blueberries into the container and painted on the crowns with my black food colorants. I put the whole container on a chocolate covered marshmallow and set it right in my carton of real blueberries. No joke….my blueberries upon first glance look as real as the real blueberries that I picked.

Towel? Check. Sunblock? Check. Marshmallows? Check.

I made this marshmallow in advance to take along in my mini-cooler (with lots of ice) on a little beach trip. I was able to indulge in warm sun, calm water and relaxation  This time I brought along pails and shovels to build some sand castles! This is a real masterpiece and took great skill to get the white fondant handle onto my tiny fondant pail and carve the shape of the shovel. It also took great skill to take the picture…FAST…because it was so hot on the beach and the white chocolate curvature was melting.  These on-site marshmallows aren’t easy to eat afterwards because the poor little things sure take a beating with the transport and weather conditions.

Belated National Hotdog Month

Did you know that July was National Hot Dog month? How did I miss that? Well, luckily hot dogs tie in with my camping theme in the last few posts.  I colored the fondant and molded the dog and bun. Then I used my brush to paint the fine details on the hotdog. This little puppy is grilled to perfection!  (And if you like burgers and dogs check out this post again. My grill was cleaner this time around!)

HBD!

I have frosted many sweet treats and I must say that frosting this little fondant piece of cake was the most fun. After coloring and shaping the piece of ‘cake’ I carefully rolled out the white until it was very very thin. I then carefully applied it to the top and back side of the cake. I rolled the candle a little thicker than I should have, but it made it easier to attach the yellow fondant ‘flame’. I used my thinnest brush to paint the wick with black food coloring.  I used a fondant flower cutter to cut a portion of purple fondant to give the piece a splash of color.
What a great combination to have - cake on top of white chocolate covered marshmallows……..delish!

Sailboat

I made this marshmallow in advance to take with me on a day trip. It was close to 100 degrees and I put extra ice in my little cooler to keep my chocolate covered marshmallow creation from melting.  I missed the boat to my original destination so I made the best of it on the main land.  It was a peaceful day with boats of all kinds coasting by and warm breezes all afternoon. It was a perfect scene for an edible sailboat photo shoot.  For my marshmallow I had rolled out the ocean blue fondant and hand molded a little boat, with the finest white sail. The fondant red flag took the hands of a surgeon to place on top with out destroying my sail.

And here is another view at the house:

A Painters Masterpiece

This is absolutely adorable! I consider myself a marshmallow artist, and having all my food colorants displayed in my work space inspired me to create a traditional painters scene today. I tinted all the colors in the palette using my food colorants and created the edible canvas masterpiece to go along with it. The ‘canvas’ is perched up by the fondant easel that I cut using the tip of my very fine knife. After the marshmallow curvature was dry I perched each piece atop its own sweet little area.

Burger-fest

I was practicing making these delectable marshmallows for my favorite aunts potential burger cook-off. I don’t typically eat hamburgers, but these patties are the sweetest kind and ‘cooked’ to perfection.  I love any kind of contests revolving around food and deserts. I used my food colorants to shade the fondants - bun, ketchup, mustard and lettuce, then piled it all together and used my showtime #13 knife to paint the bun seeds.

There's Fungus Among Us

A 90 degree Sunday = deck, sun, relaxation and marshmallows. I have my vegetables washed, cut and skewered ready for tonight’s dinner. I molded the fondant into two adorable little sweet mushrooms. I used my black and brown colorants to help give them their texture and used my finest brush to paint the black gills on the underside of the cap.

Feng Shui

I’ve been interested in rearranging my living room to make it a little cozier. I have already moved my larger sofa and the love seat closer and put a soft leather ottoman chest between the two and it looks great. I’m searching for some additional pieces of décor to help spruce it up and bring it together. Something Feng Shui to liven up the space and bring life to my earthy toned fabrics. I saw several fake plants at the store however, I felt ‘fake plants’ would contradict my attempts to try to bring light and ‘life’ to my living room.  What I had in mind was this bamboo type plant in a vase or pot……..

Mini-Saguaro

We are not in an official heat wave by any means, however, it is HOT! And it’s not a dry heat either….  The last few days I have had to keep my AC cranked to keep these delectable treats from melting as I make them. Today’s edible art piece took me few steps to make…the cactus arms and the trunk are actually two separate pieces. I used a little dab of water to fuse the two together and let it dry while I melted the curvature and covered the marshmallow. Then I rolled out the yellow fondant sun (it could also be a full moon, if you prefer), to a paper thin measure and carefully applied it to the back of the plant.  I had a tiny amount of sand colored fondant that I spread out and placed at the base which gave it a nice touch.

Interesting fact: It is illegal to harm or cut down a Saguaro cactus in Arizona unless you have a special permit. You can read about it here.
